DRAWING ASSIGNMENT 2: DIGITAL ANALYTIQUES
Demonstrating the ability to analyze buildings, spaces, and cities was the primary objective of this assignment. The first part consisted of analyzing a single building. I chose Chiesa di Sant' Ignazio because I am fascinated by the relation of its interior space with the exterior space created by the surrounding buildings. The piazza's form mirrors the interior chapels and in plan almost appears as an extension of the church's interior. In elevation, the church is decorated similar to many other churches of Rome, but with Jesuit influences as apparent by the large volutes on either side of it.
The second drawing references Sketching Assignment 6, from when the class visited Ostia Antica. A faded figure-ground map layered over a satellite image shows the existing structures among the ruins. The building from my photo fragment is denoted with a white rectangle as being in a large empty space in the center of the complex. A small diagram intends to show the building's relationship to the datum through the town.
The third image is a composition intended to represent palimpsest on the city scale within Rome. I opted to diagram the many walls of Rome on a map of the city, both contemporary and ancient. The map of ancient Rome clearly shows the hills of Rome to understand the landscape on which it was founded. Each wall from a specific time period is drawn in a different color. This shows how the expansion of Rome kept demanding new walls to farther enclose its growing borders. It is also interesting today how many parts of the city are still strongly influenced by the borders and gates created by these walls, as roads and city grids still follow these ancient patterns today.
