METHODS ASSIGNMENT 3: EXPRESSIVE STRUCURES
PORTICO OF AUDITORIUM PARCO DELLA MUSICAThis structure was also measured using our pre-determined body units. The focus was on how the steel structural system works with the glass and canvas systems that provide covering and shade for people walking beneath this portico.
There are several kinds of steel beams that connect different materials together. Two back-to-back steel c-channels that are bolted to the brick columns and W-beams that span from the street to the wall provide the primary structure, and also provide the base for the canvas system to be mounted to it. Meanwhile, square beams provide support for the glass panels above. |
PONTE DELLA MUSICA AND PONTE SETTIMIA SPIZZICHINOFor this assignment, our class also analyzed two different steel bridges. The first is located next to the Auditorium Parco della Musica and is evocative of the curved shapes of the auditoriums themselves, but also of the simplicity of the portico's structure. In elevation it appears as a simple curve but in section, it is actually two strings of outward leaning steel I-beams anchored to a steel deck.
The other bridge is located near the Montemartini Museum. It appears more complex in perspective, however in elevation it is simply two overlapping curves. A system of perpendicular braces unite the two rails, and a series of cables anchor the bridge. |
