Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona was a city that revolved around gathering. Friends, family, or even strangers, united by the layout of the streets, the buildings, and especially the food. The first thing I experienced there was a market I stumbled upon in the morning. The large sense of community took me by surprise. During my stay there I would find several other local markets that are a part of the inhabitants' everyday life, and I wish was something more common in the American city.
Gaudi's radical spin on Gothic architecture captured my heart with his organic forms that seemed to sprout from the very ground that Sagrada Familia sat on. Despite not being finished, it is truly a work of art. The inside felt like a forest that I was happy to get lost in admiring. The outside is already iconic, and will be even more so when all of the towers are finished. It is a landmark at which residents and tourists alike can gather, worship, and marvel.
Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion was captivating in its simplicity. I spent the better part of an afternoon contemplating in quiet solitude. The cool calmness of the materials, the reflections in the shallow pools, the openness of the pavilion. Everything aligned to create an enchanting atmosphere that I didn't want to leave.
