SKETCHING ASSIGNMENT 3: PALIMPSEST IN STRUCTURE
This assignment had a similar objective to the previous assignment: to recognize palimpsest around Rome, but this time on a smaller scale. Rather than looking at the entirety of buildings, I chose to observe smaller portions of buildings. The first sketch is that of a portion of arch in a wall at the Roman Forum. It has been filled in and then broken through again to create an opening with a new gate installed. It seems that it might have once been part of a larger Roman arch.
The second sketch observes how a Roman columns ruin in the Forum is situated among other structures from different time periods. Where there might have once been an entire building, as suggested by the broken cornice on the series of columns, there is now more recent house.
The final sketch depicts the inside of the Coliseum. The arches and walls of it are original, yet they have been repurposed and added to in order to make it functional for people today. Grates and windows are added to openings, and the Coliseum's interior is littered with scaffolding as people work to maintain it.
