SKETCHING ASSIGNMENT 5: NEGATIVE AND DEFINED SPACE
The purpose of this assignment was to observe how buildings create a space or emphasize a lack of space (which can also be called anti-space). I was assigned the sequence starting from Piazza delle Cinque Scole, through the piazza with Fontana delle Tartarughe, ending at Chiesa del Gesu. We walked the most direct route north and turned east just after Largo Argentina to get from the school to the church, as shown in the large figure ground map. The beginning of the sequence at Piazza delle Cinque Scole is clearly defined by 3 buildings of roughly the same height that enclose an almost rectangular space. The space walking from Piazza delle Cinque Scole to the Fontana delle Tartarughe Piazza is different. There is a small opening of space as you take the first right turn, however it seems like empty space between two walls of buildings. After walking down an alley, you arrive in the Fontana delle Tartarughe Piazza. It is also well defined as a trapezoidal shape by four surrounding buildings. Continuing on the path down an alley, it opens up to Largo Argentina, which is a large space full of ruins that lies between 3 streets and a pedestrian walkway. This space is so large that it no longer feels like an enclosed space as most piazzas do. Turning right, the street is wide, yet still feels like a stream of space between two masses. Finally, you arrive at Chiesa del Gesu, which is at an intersection of several streets that are not perpendicular to one another. This, along with the buildings that follow the erratic streets, creates a unique space with harsh angles and a focal point of the church's facade.
