SKETCHING ASSIGNMENT 6: A FRAGMENT OF OSTIA ANTICA
Our class visited Ostia Antica in February and were tasked with finding a specific location within the Ostia Ruins based on a small partial photograph of the location. We then had to draw the rest of the structure and the surrounding context. My fragment was the side of a temple right in the center of the town near its forum. I drew the rest of the remains and the stairs leading to it. I also noted the relationship of this temple building to the main road, or Decumanus, through the town.
The second portion of this assignment was to find our own fragment, a framed view, somewhere among the ruins. I chose an arched opening in a stone wall that looked out at a layered landscape of broken down stone walls. Each broken wall in the frame was successively taller than the last, leading up to a hill on which a column ruin remained. I thought it was interesting that so many levels could be seen through such a small framed view.
The last part of the assignment involved diagramming another structure in relation to the Decumanus. I took a look at one of the most important buildings in the city, the theater. It lies not too far from the entrance with two direct paths into it from the Decumanus, which makes sense as it is a multipurpose building that would have been used by all.
