That evening we held a town meeting to get some feedback from the locals about their town. Activities included a place game where we took a few people to some of the public spaces and asked their opinions on the quality, cleanliness, safety, and sociability of the space. Seeing how they perceive the space is useful in knowing how to improve it. There was also a map game where locals could point out good sites as well as problem sites for us to focus on. Overall the locals' observations were similar to ours. They perceived the existing public spaces as not clean or safe, due to the poor lighting and lack of programming. We used our findings from the tour and the town meeting to draw some conclusions to improve the spaces and bring back business and energy to the town. The first big recommendation was to move the existing farmer's market from its current plaza to where Sorosis Park is located at the street corner. It would allow for more space for activities. The street side would allow food trucks to pull up during the market hours, and the location allows more visibility to draw in more people passing by.
Our second recommendation was to bring back energy to The Lawn space by moving the stage there for live music and events to be held. If the town could add some portable furniture such as chairs or moveable tables, that would allow for more events to be held there and make the space more comfortable. Since the Lawn and the proposed Farmer's Market plaza are located on opposite sides of the Main Street, IQC proposes a parklet and street crossing to make it easier and safer for people to access both event spaces.
